Everyone knows that in September the towns across East Devon gear themselves up for Carnival Season - and Axminster’s is one of the highlights on the circuit, having hosted a carnival since at least 1866.
With floats travelling from a wide area, the town gets thoroughly in the mood with a funfair on the car park opposite The George Hotel, and music starting at around 6pm ahead of the streets closing at 7.30pm to allow the illuminated procession to pass.
The route runs from the bottom of town up past the George Hotel before turning down South Street and Musbury Road until it reaches King Edward Road where it then returns back to the roundabout. The procession itself can contain single walkers, groups, majorettes and highly illuminated floats up to 40 feet long. In 2024 the Carnival date is Saturday 21 September. Be there!
