29: Skatepark On a Roll

The Axminster Skatepark is a story of triumph overcoming adversity. It’s story goes back to 2003 when a group of young people took the first steps by created a popular self-built park at Cloakham Lawns using wooden ramps. Six years later the first full skatepark was built with metal framed wooden ramps on a rough tarmac base. Sadly, the ramps quickly became dangerous after the wooden sections were damaged and were then covered with steel sheets to protect and extend their life. This park was underused and fell into disrepair, leading to its decommision and removal.

In June 2022, work started on building a new skatepark with funding generated through planning related income using land that was transferred to East Devon District Council for rental by the charity that now runs it. allow the park to rent the land and opperate as a Charity run project.

Soon afterwards a planned second phase followed when further funding became available.

Today’s skatepark is a state-of-the-art facility where riders of all ages and abilities support one another in progressing their skills. It is also a valuable community hub.
